The RAPID Facility supports and provides instrumentation and tools for collecting perishable field data relevant to natural hazard and disaster events. On July 21-24 at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, The RAPID Facility will host an in-person, hands-on, intensive workshop providing attendees with the opportunity to develop expertise in using The RAPID equipment to collect, process, and integrate collected data through the use of mobile technology and the cyberinfrastructure platform DesignSafe. The workshop will include proposal preparation activities emphasizing the integration of reconnaissance missions across engineering and the natural, social, and health sciences.

Workshop Agenda

  • Day 1 will offer an overview of the RAPID Facility, its instruments, and capabilities, and an introduction to reconnaissance planning and data archiving in collaboration with DesignSafe.

  • Day 2 will allow workshop participants to select modules aligned with their emphasis areas to gain specialized expertise in equipment and processes of interest. Potential modules include (i) site characterization and geotechnical applications, (ii) coastal applications, (iii) street-level documentation and mapping workflows, (iv) environmental exposures and public health field research.

  • Days 3 and 4 will provide introductory, track-specific hands-on training. The Engineering and Geosciences track will focus on terrestrial lidar and drone-based image collection and processing, including the software and methods used to construct 3D point cloud models from collected data. The Environmental Exposures and Health track will focus on drone-based environmental documentation paired with air, water, and soil sampling workflows, including GPS tagging and metadata capture to support exposure and health research. During these days, there will also be dedicated time for feedback on additional equipment or resources to support interdisciplinary teams.

Application Information

Applications for this workshop are due on April 12th, 2026. Application review will begin, and notification will be completed by the end of April. We anticipate demand for this workshop to exceed capacity, so please apply by the date. Submit your application here.

A limited amount of travel support is available; this will be awarded upon acceptance and distributed after the workshop.

We encourage applications from university staff and faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, government agency researchers, and private sector professionals. Preference will be given to early-career faculty with strong potential to use the RAPID Facility in their research.
