We’re hiring: Research Scientist, Environmental and Public Health Field Data

The NHERI RAPID Facility at the University of Washington is hiring a full-time temporary Research Scientist to support environmental and public health data collection after natural hazard events.

RAPID Facility staff support technical field data collection in complex post-disaster settings.

This position will help expand RAPID’s capacity to support researchers collecting perishable environmental and public health data in the field. The role is a good fit for someone who wants hands-on, applied research work that combines field deployment, analytical instrumentation, environmental sampling, GIS, technical documentation, logistics, training, and collaboration with researchers responding to disasters.

The person in this position will work with RAPID staff and external research teams to help turn research questions into practical field workflows. This may include supporting equipment acquisition and commissioning, developing SOPs and training materials, assisting with deployment logistics, processing and managing data, and deploying with research teams to support field data collection after natural hazard events.

We are especially interested in applicants who enjoy learning new technical systems, solving partially defined problems, working across disciplines, and supporting research with real-world environmental and public health applications.

Relevant backgrounds include environmental science, environmental engineering, public health, environmental health, chemistry, industrial hygiene, earth science, biology, geography, GIS, natural resources, or related fields. Experience with GC/MS, XRF, optical spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, environmental sampling, public health monitoring, GIS, field safety, or natural hazards fieldwork would be especially useful.
